THE DYNAMIC CLASSROOM
(downloadable application in PDF form)
The Teaching Academy is pleased to announce the ninth annual Summer Institute on Teaching and Learning, a four-day experience in faculty development and curriculum innovation. The Institute will be held June 1st through the 4th (2009) at the wonderful UW-Madison Arboretum. The Institute will offer faculty and instructional staff the opportunity to:
1) design a new course, either individually or collaboratively;
2) rethink or redesign an existing course;
3) focus on teaching and learning in peaceful environment;
4) transform teaching (e.g. via technology, service learning, and classroom innovation; and
5) meet and interact with individuals across the campus passionate about teaching
A small group of faculty, instructional staff, graduate students, and post doctoral fellows will be selected to participate in the Institute, which will offer an all-too-rare opportunity for professional reflection and renewal in a collegial atmosphere. A team of UW-Madison faculty/instructional staff who can provide skills and resources on teaching and learning will serve as facilitators.
Objective
To provide a collegial atmosphere where faculty and instructional staff can reflect upon and revitalize their teaching, redesign learning experiences for their students, and engage in conversations relevant to their concerns as educators and to the broader issues affecting higher education today.
Program
This year’s program will center on teaching innovation, including technology, learning innovations, teaching styles, evaluation, and curriculum design. Each day will be built around an engaging topic in which teaching innovation will be modeled and hands-on participation encouraged. This format will allow the dynamic classroom to come alive for participants in ways they can evaluate possible applications to their classrooms. Rather than talk at you, we will engage the group in the teaching/learning innovations to facilitate on-going discussion and reflection on the pros and cons of each activity within the context of your experience. Small group sessions, occurring at least twice per day, will focus on projects that participants bring to the Institute along with plenty discretionary time.
