What is the UW-Madison Teaching Academy??

Origins and Goals:

The Teaching Academy is composed of University of Wisconsin faculty members and instructional staff. We provide leadership to strengthen undergraduate, graduate, and outreach teaching and learning at UWMadison.

In response to a recommendation by the Committee on Teaching Quality, Evaluation, and Rewards Committee, the Faculty Senate created the Teaching Academy on December 6, 1993, by approving Faculty Document 1041.

The goal of the Teaching Academy is to promote effective teaching and learning on this campus and nationally by encouraging innovation, experimentation, and dialogue among faculty, instructional staff, and teachers of the future.

Please feel free to examine the Teaching Academy's Strategic Plan (updated in 2001) in either HTML or PDF formats.

Our Basic Functions:

  • Provide a forum for dialogue on effective teaching and learning.
  • Disseminate good practices of teaching and learning.
  • Link individuals interested in improving the teaching and learning process.
  • Sponsor professional development events.
  • Analyze issues and make recommendations on University policies affecting teaching and learning.

Our Operating Principles:

  • The work of the Academy is directed toward improving what university students know, understand, and are able to do.
  • The environment of the Academy is designed to allow the free expression of ideas in an atmosphere of mutual respect.
  • Fellows of the Academy are active in fulfilling its mission, through participating in meetings, organizing symposia, reporting on national initiatives, working on sharing ideas, concerns, and teaching practices.
  • Fellows of the Academy disseminate knowledge on teaching and learning to the campus, within the system, and nationally.
  • Fellows regularly examine the structure and functions of the Teaching Academy and adapt to changes in pedagogical and educational needs.
  • Fellows express to students and colleagues their enthusiasm and caring about teaching.
