JUNE 27 - The Visual Learner Challenges and Approaches in Disciplinary Approaches to Teaching,
Kathy Takayama, The Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning, Brown University,
2:00 - 3:00 pm,
Room 110, Center for Biology Education
445 Henry Mall.
In this interactive session, we will discuss how visualizations impact student learning, and how the learner interprets visualizations during knowledge acquisition. Visualizations can facilitate contextual understanding, and can play a significant role in the representation of abstract concepts. How is the impact of visual information affected by differences in learner background? What potential barriers might be revealed through the analysis of these interpretations? We will consider the roles of visual representations in the teaching and learning of specific disciplines. What challenges might you face in distilling visual representations into effective pedagogical frameworks? We will discuss possible frameworks for thinking about fostering metavisual awareness in the learner; that is, how might we develop metavisual skills in our students in the absence of experiential learning?
