Tweeting YouTube finds by John Martin
What I wanted
For the Wisconsin Experience seminar that I taught last Fall, we examined “why are we here?” (student personal expectations, community expectations of students, and community expectations of the university, etc.). We did this through a few readings (The Wisconsin Experience, “Only Connect” [PDF].
What I tried
As part of that reflection, I assigned them the task of watching YouTube videos of university commencement speeches, which are a bit different than high school ones. It seems that high school ones tend to be more celebratory (“You are the future!”) speeches, whereas university ones are a bit more, um… sobering? (“So, now what? You think you’ll change the world?”).
Next time I would…
It worked! But next time I’d spend more time in class reflecting on it with them.
