Welcome to our End of Summer newsletter! As your summer drifts, leaps, or careens into the Fall Semester, we hope you find time to read and enjoy this month’s newsletter, which includes updates and multiple ways of staying connected with the Teaching Academy.

This month,wwe share a wide range of events and learning opportunities from the Academy and our partners. The Teaching Academy welcomes you back with multiple events: our first ever Best Practices Showcase, the Fall Retreat, and a Fall U-CLaSS session. Need time and company to process? Upcoming Events | What’s happening in the Academy?

Best Practices Showcase | Instructor Insights Across the Gamut

  • Thu, Aug 22, 9am–3pm, 2317 Engineering Hall (in person only).
  • Bring your own lunch or choose to pick up something from Union South and then join everyone back at Engineering Hall for the discussion. | REGISTER

Across the gamut! Activities, techniques, and ideas featured in the showcase can be applied to a wide range of subjects, courses, and majors. Units represented at this inaugural event span the alphabet from A to almost Z and include Ag and Life Sciences, Astronomy, Bacteriology, Botany, Division of Continuing Studies, Engineering, Environmental Studies, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physics, and the Writing Center. Teaching Academy 2024 Fall Retreat | Supporting Neurodivergence for Students, Educators & Staff (draft title)

  • Fri, October 18, 9–1130am in the DeLuca Forum (WID) and on Zoom. Doors open 8:30 for light breakfast, Zoom opens at 8:45.
  • Details and registration will be sent later.

Join guest speakers and colleagues from across campus to explore ways of improving teaching and learning and our professional environment for all. Fall Semester U-CLaSS session with the Posse Program students

  • Wed, October 30, 12–1pm in the Red Gym.

Teaching Academy members are invited to join Posse Program students at their Lunch and Learn session. This event, as part of our Undergraduate Chat Learn and Share Space (U-CLaSS) program, provides an opportunity for students to share their perspectives and ideas regarding teaching and learning with us. Teaching and Learning Meetups

  • Open to anyone on campus who wants to talk about teaching and learning.
  • 1st and 3rd Thursdays, 3-5pm at the Memorial Union Rathskeller. Please email johnmartin@wisc.edu if you plan to attend!

We’ll grab a table or two for informal conversations. Look for the “T&L Meetup” table tents. Come connect with other educators who are passionate about teaching and learning. Bring a question or comment you’d like to talk about, or just jump into conversation at hand. Food, coffee, and other beverages nearby. We hope you’ll join us!

Delta Program | Fall Opportunities for Graduate Students

  • NEW COURSE: Support Graduate Students by Letting them Observe Your Teaching. The Delta Program in the Graduate School is offering a new course this fall as part of the newly-launched Certificate in Higher Education Teaching and Learning intended for graduate students interested in faculty careers. In this course, graduate students will take an experiential learning approach to explore the diversity of teaching in higher education, from course design to interacting with students. An important part of the course includes class observations across various course levels and disciplinary areas. Would you be willing to have a graduate student observe a class meeting of your course? If so, please fill out this short form. Thank you! We appreciate your consideration to allow graduate students to observe how teaching and learning happens in your course context, as this is a valuable part of their preparation as future faculty. The Discussion Project | Sign up for Fall 2024

Registration is open for the Discussion Project for Fall 2024 (online).  A free online course, the Discussion Project Virtual supports UW-Madison instructors and leaders in designing and implementing high quality classroom discussion. The focus of the course is online synchronous video conference discussion, and the skills are also relevant and transferable to in-person teaching. Update | Changes to Academy’s Membership Form

The Teaching Academy’s membership form has been offline over the summer. We are working to restore and revamp the form and expect it to be available very soon. The Membership Committee apologizes for this kerfuffle and any stress or uncertainty it may have caused. If you submitted your nomination materials and have not heard back please reach out to the Membership Committee (uwta-membership@g-groups.wisc.edu) and we will work with you to make sure your materials are reviewed ASAP.

The Teaching Academy’s Feedback on Teaching (FoT) program offers a formative review of your instructional approaches from an invited observer, followed by a peer-to-peer conversation on how to improve student learning. | LEARN MORE. Want to observe?  The Teaching Academy’s Feedback on Teaching (FoT) program is looking for academy members to serve as peer observers. | REGISTER AS A PEER OBSERVER. Learning Community Update | Clinical Teachers’ Corner

Innovations Toolkit: Piecing Together Novel CE Planning Approaches. This toolkit encourages faculty and planners of continuing education (CE) to draw from established methodologies, offers links to articles, videos, and web resources, and provides examples of how educational planning creates novel and effective learning activities. This resource was created by the Sparking Innovation Through Continuing Education Working Group convened during the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) 2023 Learn to Thrive Meeting.

Course: Education Essentials is a collection of modules aimed at developing key skills for all interprofessional health science teachers, in various teaching settings.  How modules are utilized is flexible–one or more modules to all of them–to meet the various needs of our teachers based on their activities, schedules, and priorities.
